Major Sects of Buddhism

This provides sites on the three major groups or "vehicles" of Buddhism, i.e.Theravada/Hinayana Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism and Vajrayana/Tantric Buddhism.

Theravada or Hinayana Buddhism
This literally means "School of the Elders" and is also known as the Hinayana. The Theravada is considered the original and orthodox form of Buddhism. Scriptures written in Pali.

Mahayana Buddhism
The Mahayana literally means "Great Vehicle". This is considered the more liberal and practical form of Buddhism. Its scriptures are written in Sanskrit. Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism
Also commonly called Tantric Buddhism, this is the "Diamond Vehicle". It developed out of the Mahayana teachings in India and spread to Tibet, China and Japan.
