Categories of users:
  1. Full-time and part-time teaching staff of the University
  2. Members of administrative and library staff of the University
  3. Higher degree students and researchers of the University
  4. All registered students of the University
  5. Full time non-academic staff of the University
  6. Serving members of the University Council and its Sub-Committees
  External Membership
Those who may obtain library membership (upon written application to the librarian and/or on payment of the necessary fees) are as follows:
  1. University of Malaya Alumni members
  2. Non-Alumni members (Professionals undertaking research)
  3. Corporate members
  4. Members of the Public (occasional daily use)
  5. Retired staff of the University
  6. Retired Government Servants
  7. Staff of Government Departments and Statutory Bodies who use the library for reference only are exempted from paying annual subscriptions
  8. Government Departments, Statutory Bodies, Libraries and Other Research Institutions may apply to utilise the interlibrary loan facility
  9. Academic staff, postgraduate students and undergraduate students of local Universities (reference only)
  10. External degree students of overseas Universities who are not full-time or part-time students at any of the local institutions
  11. Staff of Non Government Organisations (NGOs)
  12. Special Membership (The Library, may at its discretion, has special arrangements with selected institutions for special borrowing facilities)

  Short-Term Access To The Library
The following categories may be allowed to use the Library for referance only, upon acceptance of their written applications:
  1. Part-time research assistans to UM academic staff
  2. Students and staff of local and foreign Universities in need of specific library materials for their research.
  3. Visiting scholars and researchers
  4. Senior Malaysian government officers who are undertaking research

The Library may at its discretion, permit other persons the occasional use of the Library with no payment.
